Some time back I decided just for fun to try to come up with a formula for who the
best pitchers ever were based on Cy Young voting. I tried a few different algorithms and
finally decided to do it with a points system, awarding points as follows:
- 10 points for winning the award
- 5 points for finishing second in the voting
- 3 points for finishing third
- 1 point for getting votes but not finishing in the top three.
- 3 bonus points for a unanimous win.
- 1 bonus point for being named on a ballot prior to 1969. Rationale: Votes were only cast for first place.
- 3 bonus points for being named on a ballot prior to 1967. Rationale: Only one award was given. Starting in 1967 one was
given for each league.
- A tie at a finishing position gives full points to all pitchers tying at that position.
So, here are the 458 pitchers who have been named on Cy Young ballots and their corresponding rankings.
